Hurricane skirts Puerto Vallarta: "PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico: A hurricane churned along the Pacific coast of Mexico on Thursday, lashing beaches with wind and rain but staying just far enough offshore to prevent major damage. The storm, labeled John, was expected to strike the resorts of Los Cabos on Friday. Government officials rushed to the area to prepare. In Puerto Vallarta, officials urged residents and tourists to take precautions, but emergency shelters were mostly empty under cloudy and dry skies. The storm was expected to strengthen Thursday."
